Detecting gas faults:

If you have any gas faults, your house could be at risk. There could be a gas leak, which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, and even explosions!

So it’s important you read on to find out how to spot any problems.

Carbon monoxide:

The most obvious sign of a gas fault is the smell of gas. However, there are also some physical symptoms that one can experience if there is a gas leak.

If you notice that you are feeling: lightheaded, dizzy, or nauseous you should leave your property promptly. If in the fresh air, your symptoms start to fade, then it is possible that you are suffering effects of a gas leak, or carbon monoxide poisoning. This can be very dangerous. So, if you suspect this is the case contact an engineer and a medical professional immediately!

To help protect yourself from carbon monoxide you should have a detector installed. For more information, and help with installing a carbon monoxide detector, please click here.

What if you smell gas?

If you smell gas, you should take immediate action. Firstly turn off the gas supply at your gas meter. The valve responsible for regulating gas flow will be connected to your pipe at a right angle. This can however, be hard to locate or access sometimes.

Then let fresh air into your home. This will help disperse the gas. Make sure you open all your windows and doors, and leave them open for quite a while. If, you cannot open the windows make sure you get outside and into fresh air ASAP!

Whilst airing your home, refrain from using any electrical switches or appliances. The sparks could cause an explosion! Also, avoid smoking, burning candles or using matches- these could all cause the leaked gas to ignite.

Once these steps have been taken, and the immediate danger is dealt with, contact for professional assistance! Do not make the call inside your home though. Remember if you suspect a gas leak, you should not use any electrical devices or appliances. Leave the house to use your mobile!

Household Appliances:

Even if you cannot smell gas, there could still be a leak. Your household appliances could be giving you signals that there is a problem. Here are some of the most common signs to look out for:

  • An orange or yellow boiler flame. A healthy flame should be crisp and blue.
  • A pilot flame always going out.
  • Soot, or black or brown marks on the outside of your appliances.
  • Excessive condensation on your windows, or musty smells in the air.

If you notice any of the above signs, contact for professional help. You should always get suspected gas faults checked, as it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
