What size boiler should I install?
Choosing the right boiler size is one of the most important decisions when replacing or upgrading your heating system. Get it right and you’ll enjoy steady warmth, reliable hot water and efficient running. Choose the wrong size and you risk poor comfort, wasted energy and extra wear on the system. Why boiler size matters
Boiler output is measured in kilowatts (kW) and must match your home’s heating and hot water demand. An undersized boiler will struggle to heat your radiators and supply enough hot water, running constantly and increasing wear and tear. An oversized boiler will cycle on and off inefficiently and cost more to run. Getting the size right ensures efficient operation, even heat distribution and longer equipment life.
What we consider when sizing your boiler
- Heating requirements: We assess your radiators and the heat they need. A typical radiator requires between 1.5 and 2 kW, so we total the output required to warm your property.
- Hot water usage: Household hot water demand affects whether a combi, system or regular boiler is the right choice. Homes with multiple bathrooms often need stored hot water, while smaller properties may be well served by a combi boiler that provides hot water on demand.
- Property size and layout: Larger homes need more powerful boilers to maintain consistent warmth, especially over multiple floors or long pipe runs.
- Future changes: Plans to extend, add bathrooms or enlarge the household are considered so the system remains suitable in the years ahead.
Types of boilers and typical sizing guidance
Selecting the boiler type is linked to both space and hot water patterns. Below are typical uses for each type — your exact requirement will depend on the calculation described later.
Combi boilers
Combi (combination) boilers heat water on demand and do not require a separate hot water cylinder. They are compact and ideal for smaller homes or flats with limited space. A 24–27 kW combi boiler typically serves homes with up to 10 radiators effectively, providing both heating and hot water on demand, making it a good fit for properties with one or two bathrooms.
System and regular boilers
System and regular (conventional) boilers work with a hot water cylinder to provide stored hot water, which is useful for families or homes with multiple bathrooms and simultaneous hot water demand. Our calculations typically start with your radiator requirements (around 15 kW for average homes) plus additional power for the hot water tank (approximately 3 kW).
How we calculate the perfect boiler size
We don’t guess — we carry out property-specific calculations. As a guide, a typical approach considers the combined kW demand of all radiators and additional allowance for hot water. Example ranges used in initial assessments are:
- Small flats (1–2 bedrooms): around 24–27 kW
- Medium houses (3–4 bedrooms): around 28–34 kW
- Large properties (4+ bedrooms): around 35–42 kW
These figures are starting points. A full on-site survey looks at radiator sizes, pipe runs, insulation, window areas and how many outlets are used at once to produce an accurate specification.
Consequences of incorrect sizing
Choosing the wrong output leads to practical problems:
- Undersized boilers: struggle to heat rooms or meet hot water demand, run continuously and suffer greater wear.
- Oversized boilers: cycle inefficiently, use more energy than necessary and can mean an unnecessarily high initial outlay.
