Gas Safety Tips
Here are our top five tips to ensure your home is gas-safe
When you own a house, you have many safety concerns, but one of the essential ones to keep in mind is gas safety. Ignoring natural gas safety may put your family's health in danger, even resulting in death, as well as cause explosions and fires. To keep yourself safe, here are some gas safety recommendations.
Make sure an engineer is Gas Safe certified.
Anyone working on gas appliances in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man, or Guernsey must be registered with the Gas Safe Register. Before allowing an engineer to operate in your house, make sure they are Gas Safe registered by visiting the Gas Safe Register online or phoning 0800 408 5500.
Pipeline Plumbing Services have heating and gas engineers available across Pulborough, Storrington and Billingshurst. You can rest easy knowing that when we carry out a new boiler installation, servicing or repairs you are in the hands of a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer.
Annually inspect your gas appliances.
Do you have any gas-powered appliances in your house? It's good to have a Gas Safe qualified engineer inspect them. It will keep your family safe and may even help your appliances last longer.
A gas safety check examines any gas appliances in a home, such as boilers, stoves, and fireplaces, to verify that they are operating safely and effectively.
How to detect a gas leak
Unusual Smell
Many appliances that use natural gas often contain certain chemical that gives gas an unpleasant odour, making it very easier to detect any gas leaks. If your home has a rotten egg or a sulphuric smell, there is a possibility of a gas leak. We highly recommend turning off the main gas supply and calling the National Gas Emergency Service as soon as possible.
Hissing or Whistling Noises
If there are any loose connections on the pipes or your appliances, it can cause gas to seep through, causing hissing or whistling noises. Try listening for noises that you have not heard before to help detect a gas leak in your home.
Check the flames
The colour of flame on your stove can indicate many things. When the flame is blue, it indicates oxygen is present to allow gas to burn. However if you find that the flame is yellow or orange is present that means natural gas is not fully burning leading to a gas leak.
Have the heating bills increased?
An increase in your energy bills could be for many reasons. The best way to find out if it is due to a case leak is to compare it to previous bills and try to find out if your energy provider has increased the tariff, if not, then there is a possibility of a leak. We would like to remind you that if there are any changes to your lifestyle, it leads to an increase in your energy bills. For example, you are more likely going to have the heating on during the winter than the summer.
If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, know what to do.
Should you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning it's vital that you are prepared. First things first get fresh air immediately, open all doors and windows to let as much fresh air as possible get inside your home. Turn off any gas appliances and turn off the gas meter and extinguish any naked flames.
You should then leave the house and go to the hospital immediately, failing that see your doctor - tell them that you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you believe there is a threat, call the Gas Emergency Helpline at 0800 111 999.
Get a carbon monoxide alarm that can be heard.
Get a carbon monoxide alarm that can be heard. Carbon monoxide cannot be tasted, smelled, or seen, so an alarm is a good approach to protect yourself. Carbon monoxide alarms resemble smoke alarms, are simple to install and should cost less than £20.
Check for a British or European approval mark on the alarm you buy.
