How Do I Check My Boiler's Efficiency
The higher the efficiency of your boiler, the more you can save money on your monthly heating bills, especially considering the fact that heating your home accounts for over 60% of your energy bills. Here at Pipeline Plumbing Services Ltd, we go through a few points to help you check how efficient your boiler really is.
Finding the efficiency of your boiler
The first step in establishing your boiler's efficiency is to look for a label with an energy efficiency rating on it. Many new boilers have a label stuck on the boiler or you can easily find this in the packaging your new boiler has arrived in.
If you have an older boiler and are unable to locate the label or have misplaced it, you can still find the efficiency of your boiler. You can do this by figuring out the model number. Simply look behind the boiler, where you will be able to see a label or plate with model information. The label or plate often includes a brand name and a number, for example, a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24i. Once you have found the model number you can search this up to see how efficient your boiler is.
If you still cannot find the details you need, asking qualified heating engineers can help. Heating engineers are highly knowledgeable in this field and they will be able to provide you with a rough rating to help you figure out the efficiency of your boiler.
What is a good rating?
If you have found your boiler's rating, what does it mean? Well, depending on the age and type of boiler, the percentage can range anywhere from 60% to 95%. Modern boilers will be in the high 80s or low 90s, which means they'll be extremely efficient. Any boiler that is less than 85% efficient is always a non-condensing boiler that is at least 15 years old.
We say that anything above 85% is good and we wouldn't advise replacing the boiler until it breaks down, as the paybacks would be minimal. Boilers with an efficiency of less than 80% are likely to be older models, and it may be worthwhile to replace them with a newer one depending on the property and the possible savings.
