What happens during a boiler service?
An annual boiler service ensures that it operates safely and effectively. An engineer will run a few inspections on your central heating system during a boiler service. But, exactly, what does it entail? We've put up this guide to help you understand why your boiler needs to be serviced and what will happen during the process.
At Pipeline Plumbing Services we offer one-off boiler servicing as well as boiler service plans! If you need any further advice or want to book a boiler service get in touch with us on 01903740538 or 07871725133.
What happens during a boiler service?
Before we go into what happens during a service, you need to make sure the engineer is qualified to do the job. If your boiler is gas, the engineer must be registered with the Gas Safe Register, whilst an oil boiler should be maintained by an OFTEC engineer. Before they begin working on your boiler, ask to see their registration ID card.
During our engineer's visit, our engineer may perform the following procedures:
Visual Examination
The service begins with a thorough visual inspection of the boiler and its surrounding area. The engineer checks for signs of physical damage, corrosion, or wear on the external casing. They also ensure proper ventilation and clearance around the boiler, as inadequate spacing can lead to overheating and reduced efficiency.
The engineer examines the flue terminal outside the property, ensuring it's unobstructed and correctly positioned. Any visible leaks or unusual noises are noted for further investigation.
Checking Controls and Electrics
Next, the engineer inspects the boiler's controls and electrical connections. This includes testing the thermostat, programmer, and any zone valves to ensure they're functioning correctly. Electrical connections are checked for signs of overheating or loose wires, which could pose safety risks or cause operational issues.
The engineer also verifies that the boiler's pressure gauge is working correctly and that the system pressure is within the manufacturer's recommended range.
Gas Pressure and Flow Check
A crucial part of the service involves checking the gas pressure and flow. The engineer connects a gas analyser to the boiler to measure the gas pressure and ensure it aligns with the manufacturer's specifications. Incorrect gas pressure can lead to inefficient combustion, increased fuel consumption, and potential safety hazards.
The gas flow rate is also measured to confirm that the boiler receives an adequate gas supply. Insufficient gas flow can cause the boiler to underperform or shut down unexpectedly.
Flue and Combustion Inspection
Using a flue gas analyser, the engineer checks the boiler's combustion efficiency and emissions. This sophisticated tool measures the levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other gases in the flue to ensure the boiler is burning fuel efficiently and safely.
The engineer also inspects the flue pipes for any signs of damage, blockages, or leaks. Proper flue function is critical for safely venting combustion gases out of the property.
Internal Inspection
The engineer removes the boiler casing to access and inspect internal components. Key areas of focus include:
- Heat exchanger: Checked for signs of corrosion, cracks, or blockages that could affect heat transfer efficiency.
- Fan assembly: Inspected for proper operation and cleaned if necessary to ensure optimal airflow.
- Burner: Examined for signs of wear or damage and cleaned to maintain efficient combustion.
- Combustion seals: Checked for integrity to prevent gas leaks.
- Spark electrode: Inspected and cleaned to ensure reliable ignition.
Any worn or damaged parts are identified and replaced as needed.
Safety Devices Check
The engineer tests all safety devices to ensure they're functioning correctly. This includes:
- Pressure relief valve: Verified to release excess pressure when necessary.
- Flame supervision device: Checked to confirm it cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out.
- Low water pressure sensor: Tested to ensure it shuts down the boiler if water pressure drops too low.
- High limit thermostat: Confirmed to switch off the boiler if it overheats.
These safety checks are crucial for preventing potentially dangerous situations and ensuring the boiler operates safely.
Water and Gas Pipework Inspection
The engineer inspects visible water and gas pipework for signs of leaks, corrosion, or damage. They check pipe joints and connections, ensuring everything is secure and leak-free. Any issues with pipework are addressed to prevent water damage or gas leaks.
Condensate Trap and Pipe Check
For condensing boilers, the engineer inspects the condensate trap and pipe. They ensure the trap is clean and functioning correctly to prevent acidic condensate from damaging the boiler or property. The condensate pipe is checked for proper installation, insulation (if external), and any blockages that could cause the boiler to shut down.
